New Town Hall and Police Station Coming

Holden Beach officials expect to break ground by fall on their new town hall and police station project. At a town board meeting Tuesday, commissioners will discuss the final plan for renovating the old town hall and building a two-story addition to it. Board members voted 5-0 at a recent workshop to approve the design for the $3.5 million project. “This project has been a sorely needed addition for a long time,” Mayor Pro Tem Gary Staley said. The addition includes tearing down the existing police station, renovating the old town hall on Rothschild Street and constructing a new two-story building next to it. Staley said the police station is in a state of disrepair. While workers are renovating the old building, town hall will be relocated to the Driftwood Plaza on Holden Beach Road. Commissioners voted June 5 to lease three units that will be available in July, and town workers will move there in August. The renovation is expected to take one year. The police station will also need to be relocated temporarily, and the board is considering the old Craig Realty building on Ocean Boulevard West as a possibility, Staley said.
